We understand the pressures you are working under.
NHS trusts are operating under some of the most demanding sustainability targets in the public sector. Net Zero by 2040 for direct emissions. A decarbonisation strategy that has to survive board scrutiny, procurement compliance, and public accountability.
At the same time, the practical constraints are significant. Your car park is in use every day. Staff, patients, and visitors depend on it. A poorly managed installation could cause disruption, safety incidents, or reputational risk, none of which you can afford.
You also need a contractor who understands NHS procurement, CDM compliance, and how to work within an operational healthcare estate. That is not something you should have to teach us.
Net Zero target pressure
NHS England's 2040 Net Zero target for direct emissions is now a priority for every NHS Trust. A solar canopy delivers measurable, reportable carbon reduction from day one.
Live-site delivery complexity
Hospital car parks operate continuously. With extensive experience delivering in live healthcare environments, our solution ensures installation works are carefully phased, segregated, and managed to maintain parking capacity and safe access at all times.
PSDS funding requirements
The Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme carries strict conditions. With proven experience delivering funded public sector projects, we ensure full compliance with grant requirements, maintain programme certainty, and provide the robust evidence your funders require.
Procurement and compliance
NHS procurement frameworks, GDPR, NICEIC accreditation, and SafeContractor approval are not optional extras. With extensive experience operating in regulated environments, we treat these as the baseline for every project we deliver.
What a solar canopy delivers for an NHS trust.

Significant, measurable energy savings
Solar canopy installations can deliver hundreds of thousands of pounds in annual energy cost savings, providing a direct and auditable reduction in operational expenditure while delivering a strong return on investment, long-term protection from grid price volatility, and the potential to generate additional revenue through exporting surplus energy back to the grid.
A visible Net Zero asset
A solar canopy is a visible transition to renewable energy. It transforms your car park into a high-performing energy asset that customers, employees, and stakeholders can clearly see and engage with, strengthening brand reputation and supporting ESG reporting.
EV charging infrastructure, built in
The canopy structure is the natural foundation for EV charging across your estate. We integrate the electrical infrastructure as part of the installation, so adding charge points sooner or later is straightforward, no additional civils, no disruption.
Phased delivery that protects operations
A strong example of phased delivery, we have delivered projects in live hospital environments. Our experience ensures works are carefully phased to maintain car park capacity, manage safe access for staff and patients and coordinate closely with estates teams throughout. Hospital operations continue uninterrupted at all times.
PROJECT SPOTLIGHT
NHS Trust | 1 MW Solar canopy scheme, Four Solar roofs & EV Charging

The challenge
Delivering a major infrastructure project in a live hospital environment with daily staff and patient traffic, strict NHS compliance requirements, and no tolerance for disruption to car park operations. The project spans multiple canopy installations across the existing estate layout.
What we did
Acting as Principal Contractor, Oakhurst Energy is delivering a fully integrated design-and-build package including structural steel canopy manufacture, engineered foundations, civil works, inverter and grid integration, and full electrical infrastructure with future EV charging capability. Installation is executed in controlled phases to maintain full hospital operations throughout.
The outcome
Once commissioned, the 750kW system will generate substantial on-site renewable power, offsetting daytime hospital demand and supporting the Trust's Net Zero targets. The scheme reduces exposure to grid price volatility while embedding visible renewable infrastructure into the Trust's estate.
"The integration of on-site solar generation has directly supported our decarbonisation objectives. The delivery team demonstrated a clear understanding of public sector compliance, operational sensitivity and long-term sustainability planning."

Funding that could reduce your upfront cost.
Several grant and tax-relief routes are available, particularly for NHS trusts investing in solar canopy infrastructure. We can help you navigate them as part of the project development process.
Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS)
Provides grant funding specifically for public sector bodies to install renewable energy infrastructure including solar for NHS trusts. NHS sites can achieve significant annual reductions in electricity costs through the installation of solar infrastructure, delivering measurable and auditable savings. Oakhurst Energy is familiar with grant framework requirements, delivery programmes, and can provide the evidence set that the scheme requires.
Annual Investment Allowance (AIA)
Where capital funding is the route taken, the AIA allows businesses and organisations to deduct 100% of qualifying plant and machinery costs including solar installations from taxable profits up to £1 million. We can help you frame the business case and enable financial advice as part of the project process.
